5 New Year’s Resolution’s We Should Be Making in Our 40’s and Beyond
I have never been a fan of making New Year’s resolutions, mostly because I end up breaking them before the end of the first quarter or simply forgetting about them in the day-to-day hustle of everyday living.
If you’re like many, you probably have some of the typical new year’s resolutions like eating healthier, losing weight, exercising more, and saving money.
While these are fine and dandy, as we age and begin act II of our lives, it’s important to make goals that benefit you during each stage of your life.
Resolutions that worked for you in the past may not necessarily work now.
We have accumulated enough life experiences to set up goals that are in alignment with who we are today and where we want to go down the line.
At this point in life, your resolutions should become an evolution.
So, where do we start?
1. First and foremost, embrace your fabulous 40’s and aging overall
Don’t be consumed with the fear of aging, do what you need to do to feel good about yourself and feel content. Whether it’s getting a new hairstyle or building yourself from the inside out. It’s important to embrace how far you’ve come in life and acknowledge your inner strength and beauty. Now, more than ever, you should be reinforcing all your achievements, whether big or small. Landed a new client? Hurray!! Worked out for 30 minutes today? Hurray!! Did something good for someone else? Double hurray!!
2. Look back on the roads not taken and consider doing something new
If you ever think that you’re too old to start something new or different, then reconsider your thinking. Remember that age is just a number so don’t let that deter you. If you feel good and capable then nothing should stop you. Nothing is ever set in stone, and no matter what age you are, there is always room to do something new if you’re willing to push yourself, set attainable goals, and be uncomfortable through the learning process. Want to get that degree? Run that marathon? The only thing keeping you from pursuing your dreams is yourself. Go for it! Need more inspiration? Check out this post: Never. Stop. Learning
3. Don’t be set in your ways, or get stuck in a rut.
You know what I’m talking about, doing the same things every day and that blah feeling of just going through the motions where you aren’t particularly excited about your day and you feel like your chutzpah is on hiatus. Make an effort to do something different every week: meet new people, take a different route, vacation in a different spot, try a new restaurant in a different city, volunteer for a good cause. In no time, you’ll move toward a life of greater accomplishment and contribution and your pizazz will return.
4. Nurture your body, love your heart more, and pay more attention to your eyes
Disease becomes a greater problem in our 5th, 6th, and 7th decade of life and there is a lot we can do in our 40’s to prevent that. Practice more of the following:
- Reduce your calorie intake to maintain weight: our metabolism decelerates by about 5% for every decade of life past 40.
- Manage your stress and relax more.
- Cultivate meditation as a habit and gain inner peace and greater self-awareness.
- Add more weightlifting to maintain bone and muscle mass.
- Quit that “bad” habit for good, we all have one and it’s not too late.
- Make heart-healthy choices like a healthy diet, being physically active, more sleep and letting go of past heartaches.
- Pay more attention to your eyes, wear sunglasses and schedule a yearly eye exam to be on top of any changes in your eye health.
5. Just have more fun already
Every now and then just suspend your responsibilities and seek your own joy and fulfillment. Just because life is busy for us doesn’t mean we should be too busy to live life. Life is short so make it more about experiences and less about materialism. Remember you make the changes and opportunities in your life, so just get out there and have some fun!
Tell me, what evolution will you be making for 2018?
