5 Reasons Why Having Shakira and JLo on the Biggest Stage Ever is Important
There’s so much being said about yesterday’s Superbowl half-time performance by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez (some good, some bad) that I felt compelled to add my two cents.
I want to believe that most people (especially women) loved it as much as I did, but unfortunately, that was not the case. In the world of social media, I came across many women who did not like it because it simply was not family-friendly.
I challenge that thought because it all comes down to how you perceive it and your pre-conceived notions.
I saw confidence, I saw power, I saw passion, I saw fierceness, I saw amazing strength. If you have it, flaunt it, I say, and boy do they have it. They owned their sexuality, they reveled in their power and many of their moves were a tribute to their culture. If that isn’t women empowerment at its best, then I don’t know what is.
While to some it looked like a high-energy dance party, in my eyes, it had so much purpose.
Here are five reasons why having Shakira and JLo on the biggest stage ever is important for our society, for women, and the world at large:
1. They raise our voices and create a more equal world for strong, capable and powerful women.
2. They show us that being a mom is not a liability, you can change a diaper and own the world at the same time. Â
3. They represent every woman over 40 who refuses to become invisible. They show us that we can peak at 40, at 50 at 60 and beyond and be just as relevant and cool.
4. They bring Latinas and diversity to the forefront. They show the world that we are a diverse people rich in history and with pride in our hearts.
5. They show us that working together, makes us stronger and bolder.
Both these amazing women embodied all these reasons with heart, flair and gusto and in the process slipped us all a lesson on what it means to be a woman in 2020.
Well played chicas and waka waka eh eh.
