It Takes Courage to Grow Up and Become Who You Really Are
Do you know exactly when you became an adult? That defining moment that declared itself to you loud and clear – I’m an adult now! For some, that moment was evidently clear, for others perhaps not so much, and for others still, that moment has yet to arrive.
Oftentimes, milestones like graduating college, getting married, buying a house, having kids, or running a successful business, have nothing to do with growing up. I’ve met young individuals with old souls as well as 50-year olds who remain in an adolescent-adult limbo and live happily ever after.
During these wonderful rocking over 40 years, I’ve come to discover that growing up is a magical thing.
It’s no secret that popular culture has you believing that adulthood is a drag, that it’s not cool. Yes, it’s full of responsibilities, challenges, struggles, bills to pay, and aging, but growing up also means connecting to your inner power, to your inner voice, to your inner authority, to your inner purpose. Growing up means we are in charge, we are empowered to step right up into our own greatness.
How do we do this? By exploring uncertain and unfamiliar territory within and outside of yourself to see what you’re truly made of. We don’t want to simply grow older always holding on to the person we once were, we want to grow up, we want to evolve, we want to always aim higher.
I’ve had many positive and negative experiences in my life, but looking back, each contributed to my growing up a little bit more each time and understanding myself better. Growing up doesn’t have an age limit, it is a continual thing. We should never stop growing up because the possibility of emotional growth and progress is always present in our psyche, as long as you’re open to it. Growing up is composed of having an emotional maturity and ability to learn, to evolve, to let go, and to move on.
I have yet a lot of growing up to do, but as the famous quote says “the trick is growing up without growing old.” Cheers.
