The Summer Reading Challenge

My 12-year old son loves any type of challenge, whether it’s the mannequin challenge, or the ice bucket challenge, or the try not to laugh challenge, he simply loves to do them. When it comes to challenges, he has a fire in his belly to be the best at whatever it is he is doing.  So this summer I decided to conduct a reading challenge with him. The idea is for both of us to read the same book(s) and see who finishes it first. This friendly reading challenge is exactly the motivation my reluctant reader needs to pick up a book during his summer break. Plus, it’s a surefire way to bond with your child and discuss the issues presented in each of the chapters.
If you’re interested in doing the summer reading challenge with your child, here’s a list of great books recommended by our very own Rocking Over 40 moms with tween boys. They are in no particular order and have something for all interests and reading levels. We are starting off with “Then Again, Maybe I Won’t” by Judy Blume.
Lord of the Flies – William Golding
Then Again, Maybe I Won’t – Judy Blume
The Westing Game – Ellen Raskin
Dear Mr. Henshaw – Beverly Cleary
How to be a Supervillain – Michael Fry
Fablehaven – Brandon Mull
Artemis Fowl – Eoin Colfer
Gregor the Overlander – Suzanne Collins
Tales from Jabba’s Palace – Kevin J. Anderson
Ready Player One – Ernest Cline
Of course, you also can’t go wrong with any of the Harry Potter, Warrior Cats, Percy Jackson, or James Patterson Middle School series.
So enjoy and let the reading challenge begin!
